West Indian Manatees inhabit rivers, canals, estuaries and bays from Florida through the Caribbean, along the eastern coast of Central America and the northern coast of South America. Feeding on sea grasses, freshwater plants, and floating vegetation, manatees eat for six to eight hours a day, consuming 11 percent of their body weight. The Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge is fed by the crystal clear spring fed waters of King’s Bay. The springs keep the water a constant 72 degrees providing a warm sanctuary for the manatees during the cold winter months. This allows for excellent opportunities for snorkelers to interact with these gentle giants of the sea.
